In 1963 when Fu Jen Catholic University was re-established in Taiwan, the German Section was created under the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature. In 1967 the Department of German Language and Literature was founded by Prof. Franz Giet, SVD. In 1974 the Graduate Institute of German Language and Literature was set up by Dr. Arnold Sprenger, SVD. In 1996 the Graduate Institute and the Department merged. In August 2005 it was renamed the Department of German Language and Culture.
