Specialized Field
Studies in our laboratory are designed to elucidate the systemic, cellular, and molecular mechanisms by which an organism copes with the stresses derived from severe hypoxia, ischemia, and noxious stimulation with a primary emphasis on factors contributing to enhance tissue tolerance in the concept of preconditioning as follows.
To explore the cellular mechanisms for the TRPV1-mediated cardioprotection. The beneficial role of TRPV1 on attenuation of postischemia-mediated cardiomyocyte death is not well known before. The potential mechanisms were examined using the in vivo coronary ligation in rats or in mice, the ex vivo Langendorff perfused heart model, and the in vitro myocardial cell cultures.
The mechanisms responsible for hypoxic preconditioning on neuroprotection were examined to see how the hibernating factor delta-opioid receptors play a critical role in preconditioning to rescue neurons or neuron-like cells against hypoxic insult.
We addressed a significant research area that has not been well understood, namely, the sensory function of the kidney. To find the novel target molecules and their interactions with classic SP or CGRP system in contribution to renal mechano-sensation is of our interests. The impacts of renal afferent nerve activity under pathophysiological condition of certain kidney disease that associated with body fluid retention or impaired regulation is also approached.
The mechanisms for anticrystal molecules in regulating the formation of calcium oxalate crystals in the rat model of nephrolithiasis were carefully studied. Recently we are interested to understand how hyperoxaluria impairs intrarenal sensing ability of calcium during calcium oxalate crystal formation.
